A very eventful year is nearing its end. Because of the generous donations we received, and the immense efforts of our Cambodian teachers and the many volunteers from Germany, Cambodia and Switzerland, we have in 2016 again been able to contribute sustainably to a better future for the children of the Countryside Class in Battambang and the Primary school in Bech Khlok.
A short review of our activities in 2016:
From June, Kim-Desiree Knoll worked as a volunteer for the Countryside Class, trained the teachers, taught classes, and introduced two senior students to the tasks of a Librarian, which ensured that the Library can now be open regularly and will be managed professionally. Furthermore, together with the teachers and Sambath, she organised the very first parent-teacher evening, which took place in October and was a great success!
The conversation was about the program and the importance of good education in general, and particularly for girls.
Especially dear to Kim's heart is the issue of environmental protection. In the context of an initiative called "Plastic Free Cambodia" students were taught the relevance of the problems the environment struggles with and how that is connected to "one-way" products made out of plastic. Kim taught many classes and created several activities around the themes of recycling, composting, waste management and resource management. Kim is back in Germany since about 2 weeks, and she can't wait to go back to Cambodia in January. More about this topic later in this Newsletter!
In August the Countryside Class students experienced two very special weeks with Sandra Fleckenstein and Florian Pahler from Germany. Sandra created classes around the theme of "Free to be me!". Through singing, dancing and acting the students were taught the basic foundations for more autonomous learning and self confidence.
Since April 2016 the kids in Bech Khlok are enjoying their classes in two light-flooded and cool classrooms. Here are a few comments from the senior students.
Somnang: "The noise of the old roof during rain storms and wind was often so loud that we couldn’t understand what the teacher was saying".
Tara: "The new classrooms are much better because it is not so hot inside and the roof is not leaking. In the old building it was sometimes so hot that we couldn’t focus on the lesson".
The teachers are of course also over the moon, and thanks to a now much better infrastructure, and relatively modern educational material and training, the quality of education has markedly improved. It is also huge progress for the school to now have decent sanitary installations, rainwater tanks and bio-sand water filters. Together with Heang and Florian I organised a workshop for the kids around hygiene and clear drinking water, which, while having a lot of fun, culminated in the cooperative production of a beautiful and informative photo-storybook.
Heang and I visited the school twice for a couple of days and made sure that, as a priority, the reading abilities were being developed and that the students learn about the wide world outside Cambodia. In that context, the students received letters from their pen pals in Switzerland at the end of the school year. And this will happen on a regular basis from now on, which is great! It means a lot to us and to the kids that they remain in contact with their foreign friends. A small, yet important contribution to a better understanding between different cultures.
And finally to the great news for 2017!
From mid January 2017 Kim-Desiree Knoll will work as Country Manager Cambodia for Seed for a whole year! Thanks to the financial support of the Swiss Batulong Foundation we will be able to pay KIim a small salary for this important and challenging job. So far, Kim has mainly been involved with the Countryside Class, but next year she will work for our Bech Khlok projects as well. It is our objective to work even more closely with the teachers by visiting them much more often. This will enable us to continuously improve the quality of their teaching. Moreover, steady progress in the reading abilities of the students is very important to us. To be able to read well is a condition for being able to learn well. Reading is the key to learning. In Cambodia, students who can't read once they reach 4th form often give up on school, becasue they cannot follow what is being taught in the classes anymore. We really need to avoid that happening anymore!
Also, if possible, we would like to get to know the families of the students better, and understand their challenges and situations better so that we can find out how we can best support them in the future.
Towards the end of 2017 we are planning to hand over the Seed Country Manager Cambodia job to a local Cambodian candidate.
To finish, I would like to thank with all my heart everyone who donated or otherwise contributed to Seed. As you can see, we have big plans for 2017. In addition to trying to further improving the teaching standards, we also want to - as quickly as possible - enable access to clean drinking water for the Bech Khlok community. Also, we want to try to replace the old, termite-ridden school building with a new school, of which, as you know, we have already built two new classrooms. Our goal for 2017 is to build one further classroom, plus a Library/Office and a dormitory for the external teachers.
The running costs for the Countryside Class for 2017 are already covered thanks to three fantastic birthday-collections!
Maybe there are other people amongst our readers who would, especially in this time of reflection, resolutions and good deeds, like to donate to our great cause! Every donation to Seed counts and helps us to continue with our good work. I will keep working for Seed completely on my own account, without any personal expenses or costs being charged to Seed's funds. I will make sure that every cent Seed gets donated is spent entirely on Seed's projects, and nothing gets lost between the cracks (there are no cracks)!
From early December I will be in Switzerland and Germany, and from February in Cambodia, at last, it has been too long since I personally spent time with my friends and kids and projects there!I I wish everyone a very merry and peaceful festive season and a Happy New Year! Andrea

Ein sehr ereignisreiches zweites Seed Jahr neigt sich langsam dem Ende zu. Dank großzügigen Spenden und dem unermüdlichen Einsatz unserer kambodschanischen Lehrer und freiwilligen Helfern aus Deutschland, Kambodscha und der Schweiz, konnten wir auch 2016 einen nachhaltigen Beitrag für eine bessere Zukunft der Kindern der Countryside Class und der Primarschule in Bech Khlok leisten.
Einen kurzen Rückblick auf unsere Tätigkeit in 2016:
Ab Mitte Jahr arbeitete Kim-Desiree Knoll unentgeltlich für die Countryside Class, trainierte die Lehrer, unterrichtete, führte zwei ältere Schüler in die Aufgaben des/der Bibliothekars/in ein und stellte sicher, dass die Bibliothek ab sofort regelmässig geöffnet hat und professionell geführt wird.
Ausserdem organisierte sie zusammen mit den Lehrern und Sambath den ersten Elternabend im Oktober, welcher ein grosser Erfolg war!
Es wurde über das Programm gesprochen sowie die Wichtigkeit von Bildung im Allgemeinen und für Mädchen im Besonderen.
Ganz besonders am Herzen lag Kim auch das Thema Umweltschutz. Im Zusammenhang mit der Initiative "Plastic Free Cambodia" wurden die Schüler über die Umweltprobleme aufgeklärt, die durch Einwegprodukte aus Plastik entstehen. Sie organisierte diverse Lektionen und Aktivitäten zum Thema Recycling, Kompostieren, Abfallentsorgung und Ressourcen-management.
Kim ist seit rund 2 Wochen zurück in Deutschland, kann es aber kaum erwarten, im Januar wieder in Kambodscha zu sein. Mehr dazu später …
Im August durften die Kinder der Countryside Class zwei ganz spezielle Wochen mit Sandra Fleckenstein und Florian Mahler aus Deutschland erleben. Sandra entwickelte Lektionen zum Thema: “Free to be me!”. Mit Singen, Tanzen und Schauspielen wurde den Kindern die Grundlagen für eigenständigeres Lernen und Selbstbewusstsein vermittelt.
Seit April 2017 geniessen die Kinder in Bech Khlok den Unterricht in zwei neuen, lichtdurchfluteten, kühlen Klassenzimmern. Hier ein paar Kommentare von älteren Schülern.
Die Lehrer sind natürlich auch begeistert und Dank besserer Infrastruktur, (relativ) modernem Unterrichtsmaterial und Training, hat sich die Qualität des Unterrichtes stark verbessert. Ausserdem ist es für die Schule ein grosser Fortschritt, nun sanitäre Anlagen, Regenwassertanks und Biosand-Wasserfilter zu haben. Zu diesem Thema organisierte ich mit Hilfe von Heang und Florian einen Workshop für die Kinder zum Thema Hygiene und sauberes Trinkwasser, den wir mit der gemeinsamen Produktion einer Fotogeschichte und mit viel Spass abschlossen.
Heang und ich besuchten die Schule 2016 zwei Mal für jeweils ein paar Tage und stellten sicher, dass vor allem das Lesen gefördert wird und die Kinder etwas über die Welt ausserhalb ihres Dorfes erfahren. Zum Abschluss des Schuljahres erhielten die Kinder in diesem Zusammenhang Briefe von Schülern aus der Schweiz. Eine Aktion, die nicht einmalig bleiben wird. Es bedeutet uns und den Kindern viel, dass sie miteinander in Kontakt bleiben können. Ein kleiner, aber wichtiger Beitrag zur Förderung der Verständigung zwischen Kulturen.
Und nun endlich zu den guten Nachrichten für 2017!
Ab Mitte Januar wird Kim-Desiree Knoll für ein Jahr als Country Manager für Seed arbeiten! Dank finanzieller Unterstützung der Schweizer Batulong Stiftung, werden wir Kim für diese anspruchsvolle Arbeit mit einem bescheidenen Salär entschädigen können. Bisher hat sich Kim vor allem für die Countryside Class eingesetzt. Im kommenden Jahr wird sie zusätzlich auch für unser Projekt in Bech Khlok arbeiten. Unser Anliegen ist es, durch regelmäßige Besuche, enger mit den Lehrern zusammen arbeiten zu können. Dies ermöglicht uns, den Unterrichtsstil kontinuierlich zu verbessern. Zudem liegt uns das Fördern der Lesekompetenz ganz besonders am Herzen. Gut lesen können heißt auch gut lernen können. Lesen ist der Schlüssel zum Lernen. Kinder, die in der 4. vierten Primarstufe noch nicht lesen können, geben in Kambodscha den Schulbesuch oft auf, da sie dem Unterricht nicht mehr folgen können. Das wollen wir mit allen Mitteln verhindern.
Falls möglich möchten auch die Familien der Schüler besser kennenlernen, um herauszufinden, wie wir in Zukunft sinnvoll helfen könnten, um die Lebensbedingungen der ärmsten nachhaltig zu verbessern.
Gegen Ende 2017 möchten wir die Aufgaben des Country Managers einem/r geeigneten kambodschanischen Kandidaten/in übertragen.
Zum Schluss möchte ich mich noch von ganzem Herzen für eure Hilfe und Unterstützung bedanken. Wie ihr seht, haben wir uns auch fürs neue Jahr wieder viel vorgenommen. Ausser der Verbesserung des Unterrichts, möchten wir auch möglichst bald den Zugang zu sauberem Trinkwasser für die Gemeinde Bech Khlok ermöglichen und das, von den Dorfbewohnern gebaute und nun termitenzerfressene Schulgebäude einen Neubau zu ersetzen. Zwei Klassenzimmer konnten wir dieses Jahr bauen und unser Ziel für 2017 ist es, ein zweites Gebäude mit einem weiteren Klassenzimmer, einer Bibliothek/Büro und einem Schlafraum für die auswärtigen Lehrer zu bauen.
Die Betriebskosten 2017 der Countryside Class sind dank drei tollen Geburtstags-Sammelaktionen bereits gedeckt.
Vielleicht gibt es noch andere, die gerade in der jetzigen Zeit, gerne etwas Gutes tun möchten. Jede Spende zählt und ist wichtig, damit Seed weitermachen kann.
Ich werde auch in Zukunft meinen Einsatz voll und ganz unentgeltlich leisten und sicherstellen, dass die Spenden sinnvoll für die Projekte eingesetzt werden. Ab Anfangs Dezember bin ich in der Schweiz und in Deutschland und im Februar endlich wieder in Kambodscha.
