During July, the students of the Countryside Class in Battambang attended several activites in conjunction with "Plastic Free July", an Australian initiative to raise awareness of the amount of single-use disposable plastic in our lives (http://www.plasticfreejuly.org/). Sambath, the founder of the Countryside Class has been involved with this initiative for a few years now, and together with Kim and the teachers, every July there is a month full of activities around this topic. It would be great if there were more events like this around the world. In the first week, the children learned to recognize plastic and to write down their plastic usage daily. Furthermore, they picked up all the plastic waste around the neighbourhood.
The second topic of this month was composting. We used composting as a teaching tool to raise the students’ appreciation of natural resources and to give them respect for the environment. We taught them about the importance of decomposition, soil, recycling and resource management, as well as biodegrable and non-biodegrable items. We also used this topic to prepare the kids for a visit at the Battambang landfill. With different methods of learning (worksheets and activities), the kids got to know how composting works and why it is so important to separate waste. To complete the topic we invited Nadine, who is working at the SAB (located at the dumpsite BTB), to our school. She talked to the students about composting, the problems with plastic and dump sites. The students learned about the living conditions of waste-picker families, the health risks to which they are exposed and different types of landfills (professional/non-professional). Nadine also built a Bokashi (composting bucket) with some of the students.
After lots of activities and lessons related to the topics, we showed the students what really happens on a dump site and how waste-pickers live. Nadine and her colleague Nina invited the Countryside Class to the SAB Center, showed us the facilities and visited families living at the dump site with us. The students talked to them about their daily life, problems, health care and education. Their homework is to write an essay about that day and we are really exited to read them all... Before the group left they were invited to play football with the SAB kids. It was a great experience and the staff of SAB is doing a great job: Their work really matters! A big Thank you to my wonderful friend Andrea Mathys, for insisting that instead of giving her presents for her birthday, her friends should donate to a good cause. An amazing 2,300 CHF was raised for Seed! Thanks to this selfless gesture, we have the costs for the teacher salaries of the Countryside Class for 2017 covered and will be able to add a few more books to the library. In 2017, dozends of children will again enjoy free english lessons, listening to stories, reading books or playing board games with friends at the library and will learn new steps in traditional dance on Saturdays. It often doesn’t take much to make a significant change in the lives of those children. It is so rewarding to see those children flourish, that Seed will try its best to make this happen over and over again. Ein ganzer Monat im Zeichen des Umweltschutzes!
Die Studenten der Countryside Class nahmen im Juli an diversen Aktivitäten im Zusammenhang mit der Initiative "Plastic Free July Cambodia" teil. "Plastic Free July" ist eine australische Organisation mit dem Ziel, die Menschen über die Umweltprobleme, verursacht durch den Gebrauch von Einwegprodukten aus Plastik, aufzuklären (http://www.plasticfreejuly.org/). Sambath, der Gründer der Countryside Class, engagiert sich seit ein paar Jahren aktiv für diese Initiative und, zusammen mit Kim und den Lehrern der Schule, wurde auch dieses Jahr viel unternommen, um die Kinder für dieses Thema zu sensibilisieren. Wie toll wäre es doch, wenn weltweit jährlich im Juli Aktionen zu diesem Thema stattfinden würden. In der ersten Woche lernten die Kinder Plastik zu erkennen und ihren täglichen Plastikverbrauch zu notieren. Ausserdem wurde die Nachbarschaft vom Plastikabfall gereinigt.

Das zweite Thema dieses Monates war Kompostieren. Wir benutzten das Thema Kompost, um den Schülern die Wertschätzung natürlicher Ressourcen und den Respekt vor der Umwelt zu lehren. Sie lernten alles über Kompostieren, Recycling, Ressourcenmanagement so wie über biologisch abbaubare und nicht abbaubare Produkte. Wir benutzten dieses Thema auch, um die Kinder auf den Besuch der Mülldeponie in Battambang vorzubereiten. Nadine, die für SAB (ein Hilfswerk bei der Mülldeponie) arbeitet, besuchte die Countryside Class und redete mit den Studenten unter anderem auch über die Lebensumstände der Menschen, die auf der Deponie leben und arbeiten. Die Kinder lernten von ihr zudem über die verschiedenen Arten von Deponien (professionelle/nicht professionelle) und die Gesundheitsrisiken. Zum Schluss baute Nadine mit ein paar Studenten einen Bokashi (Kompostkübel).

In der letzten Woche besuchten die Kinder die Mülldeponie in Battambang. Nadine und ihre Kollegin Sina luden die Schüler zum SAB Zentrum ein, zeigten ihnen die Anlage und besuchten mit ihnen die Familien, die auf der Müllhalde leben. Die Studenten redeten mit den Familien über das tägliche Leben, Probleme, Gesundheitsversorgung und Schulbildung. Ihre Aufgabe ist es nun, ein Bericht über diesen Besuch zu schreiben. Wir sind sehr gespannt darauf … Bevor die Gruppe wieder nach Hause fuhr, durfte sie noch eine Runde Fussball mit den Kindern von SAB spielen. Zum Schluss noch etwas ganz anderes. Dank der wunderbaren Idee meiner Freundin Andrea Mathys, an ihrem Geburtstagsfest anstelle von Geschenken, Geld zu sammeln, kam ein unglaublicher Betrag von 2’300 CHF zur Unterstützung der Seed Projekte zusammen! Dank dieser tollen Aktion haben wir die Kosten für die Lehrersaläre der Countryside Class in Battambang für 2017 bereits gedeckt und können auch das Sortiment der Bibliothek mit ein paar tollen Büchern erweitern. Duzende von Kindern werden somit auch im nächsten Jahr wieder täglich und gratis den Englisch Unterricht besuchen, in der Bibliothek Geschichten anhören, Bücher lesen oder mit Freunden spielen und am Samstag neue Schritte im traditionellen Tanz einüben. Es braucht oft nicht viel, um wesentliche und nachhaltige Veränderung zum Positiven im Leben dieser Kinder zu erwirken. Dies ist eine so schöne Erfahrung, dass Seed alles versucht, um es immer und immer wieder geschehen zu lassen. An dieser Stelle möchte ich wieder einmal ein grosses Dankeschön an all diejenigen aussprechen, die uns mit ihrer Spende bisher dabei geholfen haben. Andrea
