On Sunday evening I arrived in Singapore and shortly after, reached my friends house being very tired. The welcome was as warm as ever and I was treated to a great dinner.
The morning after, I went to the school library of the Swiss school with Eva Gygax. Eva works there as a librarian and has organized the donation of the books for the Countryside class library. I was extremely pleased to receive the heavy chest filled to brim with english picture books. Such a great gift for the kids of the Countryside class who will nowbe able to read illustrated childrens stories in the english language.
In the afternoon, I organized some books for older students who had asked me about those all the time. I bought some on different english language levels and will copy them in Cambodia so that they can be read by many student.
Two days later I flew to Phnom Penh where I also bought books, but this time in Khmer, which is Cambodias national language. With these books I will assemble a small box-library, which we will donate to the Jungle school together with several further school supplies.
On the day after that, I finally arrived in Battambang. After I woke up at 5.30 am, as usual to the sound of music, singing monks, screaming roosters, motorcycles and barking dogs, I met with Sambath, who is the founder of the Countryside class. After a strong coffee, we cycled to the school, where I was able to admire the progress on the library building site. The donations for building the library have by the way all been organized by Sambath. Tourists and friends from Malaysia and the USA have collected the money and given it to him. Seed will help with the furnishing of the library and if possible, fund the salary of one librarian.
Die ersten Tage dreht sich alles um Bücher! Am Sonntag Abend landete ich in Singapore und kam kurz darauf müde beim Haus meiner Freunde an. Die Begrüßung war wie immer sehr herzlich und ich wurde mit einem feinen Abendessen verwöhnt. Am Morgen darauf fuhr ich dann mit Eva Gygax zur Schulbibliothek der Schweizer Schule. Sie arbeitet dort als Bibliothekarin und hat die Buchspende für die Bibliothek der Countryside Class organisiert. Mit grosser Freude nahm ich die schwere Kiste, bis zum Rand gefüllt mit englischen Bilderbücher, in Empfang. Was für ein tolles Geschenk für die Kinder der Countryside Class, die ab jetzt illustrierte Kindergeschichten in Englisch lesen können! Am Nachmittag besorgte ich einige Taschenbücher für ältere Studenten, die mich immer wieder nach Büchern fragen, die für sie nicht zu schwierig zum lesen sind. Ich kaufte ein paar davon in verschiedenen Englisch Niveaus und werde sie in Kambodscha kopieren, damit sie von vielen Studenten gelesen werden können. Zwei Tage später flog ich weiter nach Phnom Penh wo ich ebenfalls Bücher kaufte, aber diesmal in Khmer, der Kambodschas Landessprache. Mit diesen Büchern werde ich eine kleine “Kisten-Bibliothek” zusammenstellen, die wir dann zusammen mit diversem Schulmaterial, der Dschungel Schule spenden werden. Tags darauf kam ich dann endlich in Battambang an. Nach dem ich, wie üblich, um 5.30 von Musik aus verschiedenen Lautsprechern, singenden Mönchen, schreienden Hähnen, Motorrädern und bellenden Hunden geweckt wurde, traf ich mich mit Sambath, dem Gründer der Countryside Class. Nach einem starken Kaffee radelten wir zur Schule, wo ich die Baufortschritte der Bibliothek bewunderte. Die Spenden für den Bau wurden übrigens alle von Sambath organisiert. Touristen und Freunde von Malaysian und der USA haben das Geld gesammelt und ihm zur Verfügung gestellt. Seed wird mit der Ausstattung der Bibliothek helfen und falls möglich, das Salär für eine Bibliothekarin übernehmen.
