After a month of preparing - thanks to a donation from the German organization 'Kleine Hilfsaktion e.V.' - the first 20 families in Bech Khlok have received their Biosand-Water filters from Bareebo. In a couple of days we will also give out the small ‘DrinkPure' Water filters, which the families can use until the big filters are ready. After a minimum of 45 days, the biological filter layers will have developed enough to filter 95% of microorganisms in the water.
First, the filters were transported to Bech Khlok by truck. The roads were luckily dry and not yet sandy, so the truck had no problem getting to the village. After its arrival, Bareebo held a class on how to install and maintain the filters. With small ox carts and tractors, the filters were then distributed to families over the course of a few days. By the way, the families had to contribute a small financial input for the water filters. This way we can ensure that they really want them and will make sure to take care of them. The contribution is symbolic, but almost all families were able to afford it. A few will pay part of it at a later time. Interestingly, the poorest families were the ones that made sure to pay the whole contribution at once.
The whole undertaking was very time consuming, but the happy faces of the families made it all worth it. A big thank you to the Bareebo Team, Roland Debschütz from 'Kleine Hilfsaktion' e.V., Heang (who is our Project Manager since January this year), and the teachers of Bech Khlok.

Endlich sauberes Trinkwasser!
Nach monatelanger Vorbereitung erhielten - dank einer Spende der deutschen Organisation Kleine Hilfsaktion e.V. - die ersten 20 Familien in Bech Khlok Biosand-Wasserfilter von Bareebo. In ein paar Tagen werden wir auch noch die kleinen DrinkPure Wasserfilter verteilen, um die ersten Wochen zu überbrücken, bis die grossen Filter voll funktionstüchtig sind. Frühestens nach 45 Tagen ist die biologische Filterschicht soweit entwickelt, dass sie bis zu 95% der Mikroorganismen zerstören kann.
Die Filter wurden zuerst in einem grossen Lastwagen von Battambang nach Bech Khlok transportiert. Die Wege waren glücklicherweise trocken und noch nicht sandig, so dass der Lastwagen ohne Probleme bis nach Bech Khlok durchkam. Nach der Ankunft gab es für die Familien eine Schulung und Instruktionen über den Aufbau und den Unterhalt der Filter. Mit kleinen Traktoren und Ochsenkarren wurden die Filter danach über mehrere Tage an die verschiedenen Familien verteilt. Die Familien mussten übrigens einem kleinen finanziellen Beitrag an die Wasserfilter leisten. So stellen wir sicher, dass sie die Filter auch wirklich wollen und ihnen Sorge tragen und nicht einfach nehmen, weil sie sie gratis bekommen. Der Beitrag ist eher symbolisch, aber fast alle Familien konnten ihn leisten. Ein paar werden noch einen Teil später zahlen. Interessant ist übrigens, dass gerade die ärmsten Familien, sich sehr Mühe gaben, den ganzen Betrag bei der Lieferung zu bezahlen.
Die Aktion war sehr aufwändig, aber die glücklichen Gesichter der Familien haben uns für diesen Aufwand mehr als entschädigt. Ein grosses Dankeschön an das Bareebo Team, Roland Debschütz von Kleine Hilfsaktion e.V., Heang, der seit 1. Januar als Projektmanager für Seed arbeitet, und die Lehrer von Bech Khlok.
