The year has started well. Since November 2021, the schools are finally open again for all vaccinated students and almost all of our students managed to transfer to the higher level.
However, a few secondary school students had to leave school to go to work because the economic situation (often due to the Covid-19 crisis) of the family required this. It has to be said that these students are all over 16 years old and with 7-8 years of schooling, they have been able to attend school for an above-average amount of time by Cambodian standards. Unfortunately, we cannot prevent such departures, but fortunately they are rare in "norma times.
Our first two secondary school girls made the transition to high school at the beginning of the year, which makes us very happy. During the week, the girls live in student accommodation on the school grounds, as Koas Krala, the main town in the district, is too far away to drive there and back every day. Their sponsors from Germany and Switzerland bear the additional costs for accommodation and extra lessons.
A total of nine students are currently attending secondary school in Grade 1, nine students in Grades 2 and 3, and two female students in Grade 1 at the high school.

Thanks to a private initiative of two American students, there were another 15 secondhand bikes for those students who have the longest way to school.
The kindergarten is very well attended. Since July, the Westernacher company, the main sponsor of the kindergarten project, has additionally taken over the costs for a healthy snack for the children. Heang Ho, manager and project leader of Seed for Cambodia, our partner organisation, organised an information evening for the parents in advance to educate them about the importance of a healthy diet. Many young children are malnourished and some have decayed milk teeth due to the consumption of sweet drinks, sugar cane (often chewed to satisfy hunger) and other sweets.
Thanks to Heang's initiative, the Dutch organisation Stichting Water Works (SWW) is now working with Seed Switzerland to integrate the primary school of the neighbouring village of Arai Village into Bech Khlok's education and environmental programme. SWW built a small primary school in Arai 8 years ago and is now covering the costs of improving the infrastructure and school materials and Seed is covering the labour costs. As the budget for this project is still very small, we can only offer English lessons for the time being, which are already attended by over 60 students.
Heang also organises regular workshops on education and the environment for parents and older students, and from the new school year onwards, we will extend the secondary school project to Arai Village if possible.
Other actions organised by Heang Ho (Seed for Cambodia):
Through The Helmet Squad initiative, 30 kindergarten children each received a children's helmet so that they can ride safely on their parents' motorbike.
The Rotarac Youth Club Battambang (youth section of the Rotary Club of Sangke, Battambang) received 50 solar lamps from the Australian organisation Solar Buddy, which it then distributed to the poorest children of Bech Khlok and the neighbouring village of Arai. The children urgently need the lamps for homework, reading, to go to the toilet at night, etc.
Seed for Cambodia also organises campaigns on environmental issues:
At the end of the school year there was an excursion to the forest for the older pupils with games and lectures on the topic of environmental protection and forest clearing.
In Arai, 100 young trees were planted around the school with the students and the students were educated about the importance of this action in relation to the environment.
As part of the "Plastic Free Cambodia" program, the two school grounds are regularly cleaned and workshops on the topic are organised.

And now for a new project in the area of sustainable improvement of the economic situation of the poorest families. The number of families who can barely keep their heads above water has unfortunately increased significantly in the last 2 years.
In July, the first three needy families received a pregnant cow. The first calf is for the family to keep and sell later if they wish. The second calf belongs to Seed and is passed on by us to another needy family. This continues until the mother cow no longer calves. The cost of one cow (approx. 800-900 USD) is covered either by a sponsor or by Seed Switzerland/Germany. As this project does not immediately alleviate the plight of the poorest families, there is one bag of rice per month for those who have the least. Heang always draws our attention to families whose children come to school malnourished. If the investigations show that the economic hardship is not self-inflicted (alcohol or gambling addiction, high debts due to unnecessary purchases, etc.), the family temporarily receives a sack of rice per month and the children are given a meal at school, if possible. We are always looking for sponsors for these expenses as well.
Finally, we would like to say a few words about projects that we would like to tackle in the near future.
The old school building (an open hall) in the middle of the school grounds has become badly dilapidated and urgently needs to be rebuilt. We have been doing repairs on and off for the past few years, but it just doesn't make sense now. The hall is needed for English classes and further education (for parents and students) and is an important part of the educational program.
As we are not only concerned about education, but also about the health of the children, we would like to start a program for affordable sanitation for the families next year, as most households still do not have toilets.
There is still a lot of work to be done, and it is great to see how the local population is helping and struggling so that the future of their children will hopefully be a better one.

Das Jahr ist gut gestartet. Seit November 2021 sind die Schulen endlich wieder für alle geimpften Schüler geöffnet und fast alle SchülerInnen schafften den Übertritt in die höhere Stufe.
Ein paar SekundarschülerInnen mussten leider die Schule verlassen, um arbeiten zu gehen, da die wirtschaftliche Situation (oft auf Grund der Covid Krise) der Familie dies erforderte. Dazu muss man sagen, dass diese SchülerInnen alle über 16 Jahre alt sind und mit 7-8 Schuljahren, für kambodschanische Verhältnisse bereits überdurchschnittlich lange die Schule besuchen konnten. Wir können leider nicht verhindern, dass solche Abgänge passieren, sie sind aber zum Glück zu normalen Zeiten eher selten.
Unsere ersten 2 Sekundarschülerinnen haben anfangs Jahr den Übergang in die High School geschafft, was uns ganz besonders freut. Die Mädchen wohnen unter der Woche in einer Schülerunterkunft auf dem Schulgelände, da Koas Krala, der Hauptort des Distriktes, zu weit entfernt ist, um täglich hin und zurückzufahren. Ihre Paten aus Deutschland und der Schweiz tragen die zusätzlichen Kosten für Unterkunft und Zusatzunterricht.
Insgesamt besuchen zurzeit neun SchülerInnen die Sekundarschule in der 1. Stufe, neun SchülerInnen in der 2. und 3. Stufe und zwei Schülerinnen die 1. Stufe der High School.
Durch eine private Initiative zweier amerikanischen StudentInnen, gab es übrigens weitere 15 secondhand Fahrräder für diejenigen SchülerInnen, die den längsten Schulweg haben.
Der Kindergarten ist sehr gut besucht. Seit Juli übernimmt die Firma Westernacher, der Hauptsponsor des Kindergartenprojektes, zusätzlich die Kosten für eine gesunde Zwischenverpflegung der Kinder. Heang Ho, Manager und Projektleiter von Seed for Cambodia, unsere Partnerorganisation, organisierte im Vorfeld einen Informationsabend für die Eltern, um sie über die Wichtigkeit einer gesunden Ernährung aufzuklären. Viele kleine Kinder haben schwarze Milchzähne durch den Konsum von Süssgetränken, Zuckerrohr (wird oft gekaut, um den Hunger zu stillen) und anderen Süssigkeiten.
Dank der Initiative von Heang arbeitet die holländische Organisation Stichting Water Works (SWW) nun zusammen mit Seed Schweiz, um die Primarschule des Nachbardorfes Arai im Bildungs- und Umweltprogramm von Bech Khlok zu integrieren. SWW baute in Arai vor 8 Jahren eine kleine Primarschule, und übernimmt nun die Kosten für die Verbesserung der Infrastruktur und Schulmaterial und Seed die Lohnkosten. Da das Budget für dieses Projekt noch sehr klein ist, können wir vorläufig nur Englischunterricht anbieten, welcher bereits von über 60 SchülerInnen besucht wird.
Heang organisiert zudem regemässig Workshops zum Thema Bildung und Umwelt für die Eltern und älteren Schülern und ab dem neuen Schuljahr werden wir, wenn möglich das Sekundarschulprojekt auf Arai ausweiten.

Seed for Cambodia organisiert auch immer wieder Aktionen zum Thema Umwelt:
Zum Abschluss des Schuljahres gab es zum Beispiel für die älteren Schüler einen Ausflug in den Wald mit Spielen und Vorträgen zum Thema Umweltschutz und Waldrodung.
In Arai wurden mit den SchülerInnen 100 junge Bäume rund um die Schule gepflanzt und die Schüler wurden über die Bedeutung dieser Aktion in Bezug auf die Umwelt aufgeklärt. Jedes Kind ist für seinen gepflanzten Baum verantwortlich und durfte ihn mit seinem Namen beschriften.
Im Rahmen des «Plastic Free Cambodia» Programmes werden die zwei Schulgelände regelmässig gereinigt und Workshops zum Thema veranstaltet.
Und nun zu einem neuen Projekt im Bereich nachhaltige Verbesserung der wirtschaftlichen Situation der ärmsten Familien. Die Anzahl der Familien, die sich kaum mehr über Wasser halten können, hat in den letzten 2 Jahren leider deutlich zugenommen.
Im Juli erhielten die ersten drei bedürftigen Familien eine trächtige Kuh. Das erste Kalb darf die Familie behalten und später verkaufen, wenn sie möchte. Das zweite Kalb gehört Seed und wird von uns an eine andere bedürftige Familie weitergegeben. So geht es weiter, bis die Mutterkuh nicht mehr kalbert. Die Kosten für eine Kuh (ca. 800-900 USD) werden entweder von einem Sponsoren übernommen oder von Seed Schweiz/Deutschland. Da dieses Projekt nicht sofort die Not der ärmsten Familien lindert, gibt es einen Sack Reis pro Monat für diejenigen, die am wenigsten haben. Heang macht uns jeweils aufmerksam auf Familien, deren Kinder mangelernährt in die Schule kommen. Wenn die Abklärungen ergeben, dass die wirtschaftliche Not nicht selbstverschuldet ist (Alkohol- oder Spielsucht, hohe Schulden durch unnötige Anschaffungen etc.), erhält die Familie vorübergehend einen Sack Reis pro Monat und die Kinder werden, wenn möglich eine Mahlzeit in der Schule erhalten. Auch für diese Auslagen suchen wir immer wieder Sponsoren.
Zum Schluss nun noch kurz etwas zu Projekten, die wir gerne in naher Zukunft in Angriff nehmen möchten.
Das alte Schulgebäude (eine offene Halle) in der Mitte des Schulgeländes ist stark baufällig geworden und muss dringend neu gebaut werden. Wir haben in den letzten Jahren immer wieder Reparaturen vorgenommen, aber das macht jetzt einfach keinen Sinn mehr. Die Halle wird für Englischklassen und Weiterbildung (für Eltern und Schüler) benötigt und ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil des Bildungsprogramms.
Da uns nicht nur die Bildung, sondern auch die Gesundheit der Kinder am Herzen liegt, würden wir gerne im nächsten Jahr ein Programm für eine bezahlbare, sanitäre Versorgung der Familien starten, da die meisten Haushalte noch immer über keine Toiletten verfügen.
Es gibt weiterhin viel zu tun, und es ist schön zu sehen, wie die lokale Bevölkerung mithilft und mitkämpft, damit die Zukunft ihrer Kinder hoffentlich eine bessere sein wird.
